Foot Care

Foot care is another essential area of maintenance: horses will need shoeing every 6-8 weeks and unshod animals require foot trimming every 8-10 weeks.

All farriers must legally be registered with the Farriers’ Registration Council which regulates training and standards; in fact vets are the only other persons legally allowed to trim (and shoe) horses feet. We can recommend farriers in your locality if you wish and often work with them in cases involving foot lameness where X rays and even MRI images are first required to reach a diagnosis. Good foot balance is key to a horse’s soundness and is an important factor in recovery from bone and soft tissue injuries within the hoof capsule. Farriers can apply specialist remedial shoes to assist in recovery from injury and are crucial to keeping horses comfortable in conditions such as laminitis.
