Gastric Dilatation Volvulus

Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV) is a rapidly progressive life-threatening condition in dogs. The condition is commonly associated with large meals and causes the stomach to dilate due to the mixture of food and gas.

Signs:

  • an anxious look or looking at the abdomen
  • standing and stretching
  • drooling
  • distended abdomen
  • retching without producing anything
  • weak/collapse

What to do:

  • If you suspect your dog has a GDV it is imperative you seek immediate veterinary treatment.  Success rates decrease the longer the delay in starting treatment.
