Eye trauma/infection

The equine eye is particularly prone to injury because of its position on the side of the head, and some eye conditions are notoriously difficult to treat.

Common conditions are:

  • Conjunctivitis (infection of the membrane lining the eye)
  • Corneal ulcers (damage to the clear surface of the eye)
  • Uveitis (inflammation of the inner part of the eye).

What to do:

Most or all injuries or infections of the eye will need examining by a vet.  If the eye is swollen or closed or has a discharge associated with it, you should consider it an emergency and contact your vet immediately.
